Based on unofficial election day results with all 26 precincts reporting, Missouri City Council incumbent Chris Preston appears to have won the race with 50.2 percent of the vote, or 1,123 votes.

Cynthia Gary came in very close behind with 49.8 percent at 1,114 votes.

Preston could not immediately be reached for comment.

Voter turnout was 10.79 percent among 103,104 registered voters, according to the county. Results are unofficial until canvassed.

According to unofficial early voting results released June 11, Cynthia Gary is ahead of Chris Preston in the race for Missouri City Council Position 2.

Gary has 779 votes in the runoff election, or 50.98 percent of the votes, and Preston has 749 votes, or 49.02 percent.

The candidates face each other in a runoff after neither achieved at least 50 percent of the vote in the May 7 election.

During that election, Preston received 1,840 votes, or 37.4 percent, while Gary received 1,548 votes or 31.5 percent. A third candidate, Susan Soto, came in behind Gary by just 0.35 percent. Soto had 31.1 percent of the votes, or 1,531.

Preston, the Missouri City Council Position 2 incumbent, operates Emerging Ambassadors, a youth development organization. Completing his first term as a council member, Preston’s platforms include governmental transparency, fiscal responsibility and investing in Texas Parkway and other major roads in Missouri City, according to his website.

Gary, a sociology professor, is a former Missouri City Council member and Fort Bend ISD board of trustees member.

She was elected to council in 2007 and ran unopposed in 2009. In 2010, she ran for Missouri City mayor.

The winners of each race will serve two-year terms on the Missouri City council.
