Conroe mayoral and city council candidates made their case for the highly contested positions during a Conroe/Lake Conroe Chamber of Commerce luncheon on April 28. Mayoral candidates Jim Gentry, Doris Hickman and Toby Powell discussed annexation, the city’s tax? abatement program, city employee benefits and Montgomery County mobility plans. Conroe City Council Places 1 and 2 are also in contention for the May election. Place 1 candidates Tony Fuller, Duane Ham, Sandra Whisenhunt Walker and Carl White spoke regarding, public transportation, creation of city ordinances and ongoing groundwater litigation between the city of Conroe and the Lone Star Groundwater Conservation District. Place 2 candidates Mark Frank, Seth Gibson and Demetrius “Demond” White are vying for the Place 2 seat. Topics discussed include funding for park improvements, the revitalization of downtown Conroe, public safety infrastructure improvements and single-member districts in City Council.
