Pearland staff expects the new recreation trail at the John Hargrove Environmental Center to be complete March 5. The trail is part of Phase 1 of a project—which began construction in December— that is funded by a Coastal Impact Assistance Program grant.

City Council approved a $458,072 construction contract to Excel Paving LLC in late October. Phase 1 includes an 8-foot-wide granite trail with concrete edges, concrete sidewalk connections along Harkey and Magnolia roads, nine additional parking spaces at the Stella Roberts Recycle Center, a drinking fountain and educational signage, officials said.

Benches, bike racks and trash receptacles will also be installed but were not included in the construction contract. Pearland and Brazoria County entered into an interlocal agreement to fund the project, according to officials.

Phase 2 will include a boardwalk across the center’s east pond and paddle boat launching areas.
