The Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center will remain closed Feb. 16 due to concerns with ongoing icy weather.

The community center extended its closure beyond just the end of day Feb. 14 and all day Feb. 15, in which all programs and classes were canceled across the community center’s fitness and tennis centers, and Bertha Alyce, West Houston and gymnastic facilities.

“Based on the weather forecast throughout today and tomorrow, all J facilities will remain closed and programs cancelled on Tuesday, February 16,” CEO Joel Dinkin said in a Feb. 15 update. “We need to insure everyone’s safety and it is important to stay off of the roads. We hope to be able to re-open on Wednesday, February 17 and will communicate our plans tomorrow.”

According to the National Weather Service, a winter storm warning remains in effect for Houston until 6 p.m. Feb. 15. A wind chill warning will remain in effect through noon Feb. 16, with wind chills expected to drop as low as 15 degrees below zero.

However, the community center is still offering live and on-demand fitness classes Feb. 15 and 16 through its J @Home.

Meanwhile, in anticipation for the inclement weather this week, clients for Meals on Wheels already received their frozen meals for Feb. 15 and 16 on Feb. 12, according to the community center.
