La Tiendita is now open at Bayland Community Center in the Gulfton area offering fresh, healthy food to families in need.

La Tiendita opened Feb. 27 in partnership with the Tejano Center, a local nonprofit organization. The food market gives guests access to items such as fresh produce and other community resources, Precinct 4 officials said in an email.

Community members can also sign up for nutrition classes and cooking demonstrations at the market. Classes take place from 9 a.m.-noon, according to the organization's website. The schedule for upcoming classes in Gulfton are as follows:

Precinct 4 Commissioner Lesley Briones spoke at a November ribbon-cutting ceremony and addressed the high rates of food insecurity in the state.


"Unfortunately, Texas has the second highest rate of food insecurity in the nation,' she said. "I want us to be leading for the right reasons, not for reasons like that."
