The first Mom and Baby Mobile Health Center unit in Houston opened Dec. 2 at the Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital.

Two-minute impact

According to a Dec. 1 news release, the 30-foot mobile health center includes two clinical rooms, an intake and check-in area, a bathroom, small lab and a vaccine-compliant refrigeration system.

The unit provides critical health services for pregnant women in underserved communities, such as pre-conception, pregnancy, postpartum and newborn intervention, as well as primary, wellness and preventive care.

Taking a step back

The concept was first announced in 2023 after Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas representatives announced in September that they would fund the $1.2 million grant to bring the first mobile unit to Texas.

The mobile unit is a collaboration with BCBSTX, the Memorial Hermann Health System and March of Dimes, a nonprofit organization in Houston that specializes in healthcare for women and babies.

According to a news release by BCBSTX in 2023, the mobile health center is the March of Dimes' sixth unit in the country with other locations in Arizona, Ohio, New York and Washington.
