According to the news release, he spent over 20 years as president and Chief Operating Officer at Midway, a real estate investment, development and construction firm in Houston, where he worked on significant projects such as the development of the Town and Country Mall and CityCentre. Bryant also served as co-CEO and partner of Parkway, a joint venture between Parkway Properties and Midway.
Bryant also served on the board of directors for various affordable housing nonprofit organizations, including Avenue and the Fifth Ward Redevelopment Authority. He also taught real estate and finance courses at the University of Houston’s Bauer School of Business.
Zooming in
As CEO of the Houston Housing Authority, Bryant will provide operational oversight to ensure that HHA provides quality, affordable housing options, and promotes education and economic self-sufficiency.
The Houston Housing Authority provides affordable homes and services to more than 60,000 low-income Houstonians.
“I am ready to go to work for the citizens of Houston and all of the stakeholders of the Houston Housing Authority,” Bryant said in the release. “I look forward to collaborating with dedicated colleagues and community partners to strengthen affordable housing in our region while fostering an environment of integrity, transparency and respect.”
How we got here
Bryant’s hiring comes after previous president and CEO David Northern resigned in November amidst mismanagement investigations. Bryant replaces HHA interim president and CEO Jennine Hovell-Cox.
Houston Mayor John Whitmire said in the Feb. 4 news release that he’s confident Bryant will bring a “strong and visionary” leadership to HHA.
“Last year, my administration overhauled the HHA board, and today, the public is witnessing the positive impact of that change,” Whitmire said. “The HHA now operates with transparency and accountability while working to eliminate corruption and waste. I thank Chairman [Joseph] Proler and the HHA Board of Commissioners for their dedication to the mission of increasing the availability of affordable housing for Houstonians."
