Due to an increase in water demand July 15-16, officials with the city of West University Place are asking residents to conserve water.

A July 17 announcement from the city states residents are encouraged to follow water conservation tips to manage water demand and avoid activating the city’s drought contingency plan.

City officials advised residents to water their lawns from 9 p.m.-2 a.m. and limit watering lawns to no more than three times per week.

Residents should also examine their irrigation systems and indoor plumbing for leaks, officials said via the announcement.

Adjusting sprinkler cycles and spray angles on sprinkler heads will allow residents to maximize water efficiency and prevent runoff.

The city has not activated its drought contingency plan, meaning the conservation measures are still voluntary. The last time the city activated its contingency plan was summer 2022, when drought conditions gripped the Greater Houston area and much of the state.

Officials will activate the drought contingency plan based on a formula that takes water use and capacity levels into account, the announcement states.
