Water rates are slated to increase for users in the city of West University Place on Jan. 1, 2023, with new rates reflected on February bills for residents.

Rates will increase by 6% for water use, 3% for sewer and 3.5% for solid waste, according to a Nov. 14 news release from the city. For a residential water user with a 5/8-inch or 3/4-inch meter, the minimum rate would increase from $11.15 per base charge to $11.82 per base charge, according to city information. For the first 3,000 gallons, the rate per 1,000 gallons will go up from $4.40 to $4.66 for regular meters.

Meanwhile, residential sewer rates will increase from $9.25 to $9.53, and the regular solid waste rate will increase from $33.96 to $35.15.

The rate increases are a result from discussions that took place prior to the city adopting its fiscal year 2022-23 budget in September. Recommendations came from a comprehensive water and wastewater rate study conducted in February. City Council members also debated a possible alternative plan in August that would have involved charging a rate that progressively increases based on water consumption.

More information about the rate changes in store for 2023 can be found on the city's website.
