Nine candidates submitted their application for the upcoming May 3 West University Place general election, with incumbent Mayor Susan Sample running unopposed and incumbents Mayor Pro Tem John Montgomery and council member Shannon Carroll deciding not to run for re-election this year.

West U residents will be able to vote for all four council member positions and the mayor, each serving two-year terms. Council members can't serve for more than three consecutive terms in each office, according to the city's website.
Candidates filing for the four city council positions include:
- John Barnes, former city council member
 - John Bertini, former city council member
 - Clay Brett, incumbent
 - Steve Damiani
 - Matthew "Mateo" Fisher
 - Matt Hart, incumbent
 - Kalie Jackura Rainsberger
 - Nicholas Thomas Stuart
 
Dates to know
Early voting for the May election will take place April 22-29, according to the Harris County clerk's office. The deadline to apply for a mail ballot is April 22 and the last day to register to vote is April 3.
