Adults seeking High School Equivalency or other certifications in Harris County will soon have a new $19 million classroom space.

Officials with the Harris County Department of Education cut the ribbon on a new Adult Education Center July 19, located in North Houston at 6515 Irvington Blvd.

“When people come in this building, I want them to be inspired,” HCDE Superintendent James Colbert Jr. said in a statement. “We want to show them the world is not flat and that regardless of all the negativity and life circumstances, it doesn’t matter. When our students come inside, they should feel like anything is possible.”

At 51,000 square feet in size and four stories tall, the center features more than 20 classrooms and labs, as well as a multipurpose room and a community outreach room meant to serve as a gathering space for the community, according to a July 19 news release.

In addition to High School Equivalency certificates, the center also includes programs for those seeking U.S. citizenship, for English language learners and other vocational certifications, including phlebotomy and certified nursing assistant. It serves more than 6,000 students each year, according to the release.

The first class to be held in the new center will begin in August.
