Yvette Johnson is the new owner of the Sylvan Learning Center at 5316 Bissonnet St., Bellaire, a job she took over after previously serving as special education department chair and coordinator at Houston ISD.

After working in marketing and customer service, Johnson said she decided to change her career path and dive into education. She said some of her goals at Sylvan include helping students who are facing challenges brought on by the coronavirus pandemic.

“The students are really suffering right now with everything that’s happened with COVID[-19], and so many students are behind," said Johnson, who officially took over the center in May. "So we’re servicing as many students as we can. Our goal is just to help as many students close the gaps that have had been created by them being [in] an online school or not even attending school at all."

Johnson said she eventually wants to add more services at Sylvan, including enrichment programs and programs related to science, engineering, technology and math.

Sylvan provides supplemental and enrichment education for students in grades K-12. However, Johnson said former students now in college have come back for extra assistance as well.
