The Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation opened a new family library this August for the New Hope Housing Savoy community.

How it happened

The Foundation's Young Professionals Group raised approximately $30,000 through their annual Storybook Gala event in 2023 to renovate the library. In June, volunteers gathered over 600 books for children and teens to create a reading space.

The renovated library is now home to over 700 books for residents of the New Hope Housing Savoy community to read and enjoy.

New Hope Housing Savoy is an apartment complex near Gulfton and Sharpstown that is designed for families and individuals with modest incomes. The library is built within the complex.

What they're saying

YPG Chair Caitlin Rance said the group that assisted in the library renovations is excited to see the space finally open up.

"Through generous donations and fulfilling work done by all of our members, we were able to provide this resource for New Hope Housing Savoy," she said. "The opening of this new family library actively works towards fulfilling our mission of improving lives through the power of literacy, and we are looking forward to the positive impact it will have on this community.”
