GameStop, a large retail gaming hub in the United States, disclosed in a recent Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filing that it closed 590 stores in fiscal year 2024 and expects to shutter a "significant number of additional stores" during FY2025.

For the U.S. federal government, fiscal year 2025 ran from Oct. 1, 2024, to Sept. 30, 2025. However, some businesses and organizations can use different schedules, including a common cycle that goes from Feb. 1, 2025, to Jan. 31, 2026, according to Investopedia.

What we know

While GameStop has yet to release a standalone press release on the closures, the company's SEC filing states that officials have conducted a "comprehensive store optimization review" and are identifying for closure based on market conditions and individual store performance.

In the company's documents, GameStop notes that a significant number of customers have chosen to download games instead of buying games physically in-store.

The details

In the 2025 Form 10-K filed with the SEC, the company explains how increasing digital game downloads could hurt physical game sales.

“The current consoles from Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft have facilitated download technology. Downloading of video game content to the current generation video game systems continues to grow and take an increasing percentage of new video game sales," the filing states. "If consumers’ preference for downloading video game content in lieu of physical software continues to increase, our business and financial performance may be adversely impacted.”

The projections

GameStop has yet to release a formal list of all individual stores closing by city or region. However, an unofficial list was compiled for stores that have closed in January based on employee notifications or closing signs on storefronts and websites.
