Beautique Day Spa & Salon did not start with over 70 staff members across two floors.

When founders Frank and Ginny Burge opened the salon’s first iteration in 1956 in Rice Village, it was a 1,000-square-foot space.

Now, 65 years later, the couple still maintains an active hand in the salon—which has expanded to 22,000 square feet—and can still be found on the floor interacting with employees and customers.

“You don’t really find full-service salons and spas anymore for a reason: it’s because they are a lot of work,” said Susan Finn, Frank and Ginny’s daughter who shares ownership responsibilities with her parents and her brother, Frank Jr.

In addition to its hair services, which include cuts, styling, coloring, transformation and treatment, Beautique offers facials, massages, manicures and pedicures, as well as an advanced clinical spa for injectables and procedures.

“A lot of people don’t realize we have a whole spa upstairs,” Finn said.

Beautique eventually landed on Times Boulevard, and though it has had many locations, it has always maintained a Rice Village presence, Frank said.

In 1956, the salon was located on the south side of Rice Boulevard, a time when major thoroughfares like Kirby Drive had yet to be paved, Frank recalled. When Beautique had moved to its second location on the north side of Rice Boulevard, the size had doubled.

The business’s success has played a large role in its growth, but so has the evolution of the beauty industry, Frank said.

“It used to be that when a hairdresser was licensed, they had to do everything,” Ginny said. “They had to do manicures, the hair, the facials; it was across the board. As the beauty business grew over the years, then you could specialize.”

The family has made sure the business continues to evolve with advancements in the beauty industry as well as maintain its expert staff. On the horizon, Beautique will look to continue its decadeslong success.

“Our goal is to continue to offer the best customer service with what services we do offer to the best of our ability,” Finn said.
