Correction: The map has been updated to reflect that the Texas Department of Transportation will only make landscaping improvements within League City's boundaries.

Major roadways in League City, including FM 518, FM 646, FM 2094 and SH96, will undergo landscaping improvements as part of the Texas Department of Transportation’s wider efforts to beautify its roadways throughout the Greater Houston area.

The gist

The landscaping improvements are a part of TxDOT’s Green Ribbon Award program.

The Green Ribbon Award Program was created to export Houston District’s Green Ribbon Project to nearby cities with populations greater than 100,000 residents, according to a 2017 TxDOT manual.

According to a Feb. 7 news release from League City, the project will cost the agency $2 million and will include:
  • The construction of plant beds inside the medians
  • Irrigation installation
  • Planting a large variety of trees, shrubs and other landscaping
One more thing

League City’s project management team and parks development worked with TxDOT officials to choose plantings that could withstand the exhaust of vehicles. Officials settled on live oaks, gulf muhly, dwarf Texas palmetto and crepe myrtle, according to the news release.

One more thing

TxDOT expects to complete the improvements by this fall, according to the news release.
