PREVIEW: League City to have second vote on public camping ban, consider 5-year economic development plan

Efforts by League City to curb camping on public and private property throughout the city could go into law if City Council passes the second reading of an ordinance establishing “healthy spaces” at its June 9 meeting.

Previously, League City City Council voted 7-1 at its May 12 meeting to pass the first reading of the ordinance. Council member Tom Crews voted against the ordinance and said it unfairly targeted homeless people.

What residents should know

The ordinance prohibits camping on private property without written authorization from the property owner or in public places, unless they are expressly designated for that purpose, such as recreational vehicle parks or campgrounds, according to previous reporting by Community Impact.

What else?

The city will also consider adopting a strategic plan to guide its economic development over the next five years, including a roadmap to support new and existing businesses, as well as facilitating commercial development that balances the burden on taxpayers, according to a city presentation.

One more thing

The city will also consider entering an agreement with the Texas Department of Transportation for traffic and drainage improvements at the intersection of Walker Street and SH 96, according to city documents.

Additionally, City Council will consider expressing support for the widening of FM 270 from FM 518 to FM 646, a project currently spearheaded by the Houston-Galveston Area Council and TxDOT, according to city documents.
