The increase was approved by CCISD’s board of trustees at its Oct. 28 meeting.
The overview
The compensation increase was approved by the Galveston County Commissioners Court in August, according to district agenda documents.
Compensation for each SLO is calculated according to their individual career path step and corresponding salary grade or step, according to Galveston County Commissioners Court documents.
Positions that determine pay grades can range from deputy I through V, sergeant I and II, lieutenant, and captain, county documents show.
Salaries for these positions ranged from $51,250 to over $93,800 in fiscal year 2023, according to county documents.
Diving in deeper
There are 47 SLOs at CCISD, district documents show.
According to county documents, SLOs have some of the following duties for CCISD:
- Conduct investigations of all criminal violations that occur on CCISD property (unless the violation is major, such as murders or sexual assault, in which SLOs will assist the law enforcement agency with primary jurisdiction)
- Patrol the boundaries of CCISD campuses to control narcotic or alcohol sale and use
- Work with faculty, administration, student body and parents to develop the knowledge and skill required of faculty, administration, student body and parents to detect the presence and dangers of narcotics and alcohol
- Act as educational resources for the criminal justice system and its operation in society
- Provide security on CCISD campuses to prevent theft, trespassing and intrusion
- Respond to night and/or weekend calls when CCISD building are found opened or unlawfully entered
The cost increase for both the SLOs and SLO administrative assistant is nearly $130,500, which will be paid for by Galveston County, district officials said.
Since SLOs are funded by the county, CCISD has not had to make any financial contributions toward these compensation increases, district documents show.
