Galveston County has been seeing an uptick in collected COVID-19 cases since the beginning of 2022, according to the Galveston County Health District dashboard.

The county collected 5,173 cases the week of Jan. 2 and collected 3,548 cases the week of Jan. 9. A year prior, the week of Jan. 10, 2021, there were 1,580 cases reported, according to GCHD data.

Previously, the county had seen a 469% increase in cases between the weeks of Dec. 12 and Dec. 26, as reported by Community Impact Newspaper.

During the week of Jan. 9, 21% of tests taken were reported as positive. The week of Jan. 10 during 2021, the county reported 14% positive test results..

The GCHD reported an additional 1,871 cases during the days of Jan. 15, 16 and 17 in a Jan. 18 news release. The county noted these cases are reported to them, meaning the cases could have occurred at any time but are just now being reported to the county for their case records. It also reported 840 recoveries, which also have the same note as the reported cases.



The county has estimated that over 197,972 residents have become fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as of Jan. 18.

The press release also reported that two residents of Galveston County died from COVID-19 on Jan. 9 and Jan. 10.

The county also reported that as of Jan. 14 there had been 5,933 breakthrough cases in Galveston County, resulting in a 3% breakthrough rate. Breakthrough cases are defined as anyone who tests positive for COVID-19 after being fully vaccinated, according to the GCHD.
