Montrose TIRZ to begin first steps of parking study in June

The Goodman Corporation, a civil engineering company in Houston, is expected to start the first step of a nine- to 10-month project in June to assess the parking situation within the Montrose community.

Montrose Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone officials discussed the parking study at a May 19 meeting, which will include examining several factors to help support implementing future parking policies within Montrose. According to the agenda item, the scope of the study will include:

• Identifying nonresidential parking supply and demand throughout the area
• Documenting negative impacts of redevelopment on parking
• Consider establishing a parking benefits district to generate revenue for the city of Houston and Montrose community projects from existing on-street parking
• Evaluating residential permit parking areas

The goal of the study is to be able to provide a series of recommended parking policies to address any parking challenges identified within the TIRZ boundaries.

Mapping it out

The Montrose TIRZ boundaries, according to its website, are:

• North: Allen Parkway
• South: Hwy. 59
• West: South Shepherd Drive
• East: Taft to Fairview to Bagby streets, Hwy. 59 to Main Street

The boundaries also include areas along Montrose Boulevard from Hwy. 59 to the Buffalo Bayou as well as specific sections along Fairview Street, according to the website.

Looking ahead

The first step of the $140,000 study will begin in June with project management and community engagement, which is expected to include participation in two community events, up to three presentations at meetings and coordination with local businesses.

According to the Goodman Corporation's presentation, the five-step project will be complete in March.
