Houston Methodist receives record $110M donation to fund neuroscience research, women’s healthcare services

In a June 24 news release, Houston Methodist announced its acceptance of a $110 million philanthropic gift that will further advance research and care related to neuroscience, women’s health and other diseases among various neurological conditions.

The gift is the largest sum donated to the health system in its more than 100-year history, according to release details.

Explained

Officials said the commitment will establish two new funds in support of research acceleration and the improvement of several care services offered by the system.

The first is an innovation fund backing operations within the Houston Methodist Academic Institute and the Houston Methodist Neurological Institute. The second is an excellence fund dedicated to advancing women’s health initiatives in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, officials said.

This financing will supplement Houston Methodist’s existing programs that allow certified physicians to work across specialties to provide patients with personalized care and treatment, per the release.

Diving in deeper

Using the latest medical technology and equipment, the Neurological Institute treats a range of neurological diseases and conditions across 21 specialized centers and programs.

According to the system’s website, these services currently focus on care related to:

• Neurology
• Neurosurgery
• Neuro-intensive care
• Neuroradiology
• Neurorehabilitation
• Ophthalmology
• Psychiatry

According to Houston Methodist's website, these services include:

• Gynecologic oncology as part of the center’s cancer care
• Gynecology
• Mammograms and breast screenings
• Osteoporosis
• Pelvic health and urogynecology
• Additional services for women with unique needs involving heart and vascular care, neurology and orthopedics, among several others

In the announcement, Dr. Jenny Chang, president and CEO of the Houston Methodist Academic Institute, said the funds will expand what is already known about neurological diseases and women’s health. The funds will also grant facilities access to cutting-edge tools necessary for treatment development.

“This tremendous gift will accelerate translational research that broadens our understanding of neurological and other diseases," Chang said. “It will allow us to leverage state-of-the-art platforms to detect, diagnose and deliver therapeutics, keeping patient care at the center of our mission.”

A new chapter

The donor behind the gift, The Brockman Medical Research Foundation, is a private, Houston-based foundation established by the Brockman Family, according to the news release.

Through its donations and partnerships with various organizations, the foundation seeks to promote education and to assist with research funding in the science, medicine and healthcare fields.

Houston Methodist will formally recognize the foundation for its gift by establishing the name of its newest hospital facility as the Brockman Centennial Tower, officials said. The tower’s entrance will additionally be named the Anna Margaret Bellows Centennial Hall.

Once completed, the 26-story hospital will add nearly 400 patient beds to the current occupancy, as well as house the growing emergency department and connect directly to the Paula and Joseph C. “Rusty” Walter III Tower at Houston Methodist’s flagship location in the Texas Medical Center, according to release details.

The Brockman Centennial Tower is scheduled to open in 2027.
