U.S. Rep. Christian Menefee is seeking his first full term representing Texas’ 18th Congressional District.
Some background
Menefee, a former Harris County attorney, won a January 2026 special election to succeed the late U.S. Rep. Sylvester Turner and went on to defeat longtime U.S. Rep. Al Green in the Democratic primary runoff.
He will face Republican Ronald Dwayne Whitfield, a landscaping contractor, in the Nov. 3 general election.
Texas’ 18th Congressional District encompasses a large portion of Houston, stretching from central Houston neighborhoods, including Downtown, Midtown, Third Ward and Fifth Ward south and southwest to areas including the Texas Medical Center, Sunnyside and Brays Oaks. The newly redrawn district also extends into Fort Bend County, including portions of Missouri City, Stafford and Fresno.

What would your top priorities be if re-elected?
Lower costs for families, defending voting rights, fighting for environmental justice in communities that have been overlooked for too long, and making sure the federal government delivers for working families.
What are the biggest challenges facing District 18?
Rising costs are squeezing families out of the neighborhoods they built. Add crumbling infrastructure and health care access gaps, and folks need a fighter in Washington, not another politician playing it safe.
What is needed to balance growth and affordability in Texas?
Growth can't come at working families' expense. I’ve co-sponsored several pieces of legislation aimed at lowering the cost of living by taking on wealthy special interests and corporate billionaires who drive up prices for working families.
What projects are most important for Congress to focus on for the future of Texas?
Everywhere I go, I hear the same thing: groceries cost more, rent is higher, electric bills keep climbing, and families are stretched thinner than ever. We need investments that will lower costs, but also continuing to focus on issues like flood mitigation and water infrastructure.
What do you see as the greatest challenge for Texas in the next 5 years?
Climate-driven disasters are outpacing our infrastructure. Without real investment in resilience, water systems, and the power grid, families will keep paying the price for decades of shortsighted planning.
