Hundreds of Houstonians descended on Market Square Park in Downtown Houston on Sept. 9 for the debut of a new farmers market featuring the Heights' own Central City Co-Op alongside 40 local and regional farmers, makers and merchants.
The Market Square Park Farmers Market, a collaboration between Central City and the Downtown District, is slated to return to the park each Saturday through Nov. 18, where it will run from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.
Guests at the market will find fresh, seasonal fruits and vegetables as well as meats, proteins, prepared foods and other household goods, according to a news release. Multiple forms of payment are accepted at the market—which emphasizes affordability—including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program-Electronic Benefit Transfer.
The new market embraces the history of Market Square Park, which has hosted open-air produce and fish markets dating back to the 1830s. The weekly markets will also feature live music and other entertainment from local artists.
