A new interactive art installation will be open starting July 4 along the Plaza at Avenida Houston that residents and visitors can experience until Sept. 7.
What is it
The installation, called Horizon, is an egg-shaped dome that inspires visitors to "ignite their imagination" as they gently rock the chair inside the interactive structure to activate a unique blend of light and sound, according to a June 25 news release.
The Horizon was created by artist Olivier Landreville in collaboration with Serge Maheu, a sound and light designer.

Landreville's installations also include Laps, a 7.8-foot hourglass in Canada that allowed residents to "control time" by flipping the hourglass; Boutique, a floral unit in Coral Gables that involved unfolding petals that created patterns of shifting light; and the E/motion, a revisited version of a childhood see-saw that was installed across several cities in the U.S.
On the other hand, Serge Maheu's portfolio combines creative coding, music and technology to create interactive pieces designed around light and sound.

Why it matters
Houston First CEO Michael Heckman said it's important to use public art as a vehicle to encourage people to engage and connect.
"We want the Plaza at Avenida Houston to be a destination for visitors and residents to enjoy interactive installations like Horizon that inspire people to slow down and unwind," he said. "We're proud to continue bringing world-class art like this to our campus for folks to experience."
One more thing
The Horizon will include five domes located along the Plaza from the George R. Brown Convention Center to Discovery Green Park. It is free of charge.
