Aerospace pioneer Wally Funk will be honored as a hometown hero by the city of Grapevine on Aug. 7 with a parade and community celebration, according to a city press release.
The parade will start at noon and will travel south on Main Street from Wall Street toward Dallas Street. It will culminate on Peace Plaza, at Grapevine Main Station, and will be followed by remarks from aviation leaders, Grapevine City Council, Mayor William D. Tate and Funk herself.
"It is a great day for Grapevine when one of our most treasured citizens participates in such a historic event. Wally Funk is a true trailblazer, and I and all of the residents of Grapevine are so proud of her as she propels not only herself but the entire world into the realm of commercial space travel,” Tate said in a press release.
Funk made history July 20 when, at the age of 82, she became the oldest person to travel to space onboard Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin New Shepard suborbital space tourism rocket.
