Data: August 2020 report shows local sales tax collections in Grapevine, Colleyville, Southlake

The ongoing coronavirus pandemic is having varying effects on the local economies of Grapevine, Colleyville and Southlake.

The Texas comptroller's office released its August report for statewide sales tax collection on Aug. 12. This report generally reflects data from sales made in June.

Grapevine reported a year-over-year decrease in sales tax collections of 14.43%. Colleyville, on the other hand, reported a 15.37% increase, and Southlake reported a 7.94% increase.

Southlake Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Mark Guilbert cited businesses’ continued efforts in making shoppers feel safe as a reason for why sales may be trending upward.

Statewide sales tax collections were up by 3.6%, according to comptroller data.

“State sales tax collections in July were better than expected, increasing despite the high unemployment due to the pandemic,” Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar said in an Aug. 3 news release. “The increase was due to a surge in collections from the retail trade sector; receipts from other major sectors—including mining, construction, wholesale trade, services and restaurants—showed significant declines."
