Georgetown offers free holiday recycling program for trees, lights

The city of Georgetown is offering a free recycling collection program for Christmas trees and string-lights, according to a Nov. 20 news release.

The two-minute impact

Old or broken string lights cannot be placed in residential or commercial recycling bins, according to the release. Instead, they can be dropped off at the following collection locations free of charge through Jan. 31:

• Georgetown Municipal Complex, 300-1 Industrial Ave.
• Georgetown Public Library, 402 W. Eighth St.
• Georgetown Recreation Center, 1003 N. Austin Ave.
• Sun City Cowan Creek Amenity Center, 1433 Cool Spring Way

Additionally, real Christmas trees can be dropped off for free at the city of Georgetown Collection and Transfer Station at 250 W.L. Walden Drive from Jan. 2-31. Trees should not have ornaments, tree stands or garlands attached, and artificial trees are not accepted, the release states.

Something to note

​​​Residents may also leave Christmas trees on the curb for pickup on their regular yard trimmings collection day, according to the release. Trees larger than 7 feet should be cut into sections.
