City of Georgetown warns first freeze of the season possible Dec. 11

Ahead of a coming cold front, the city of Georgetown has provided guidance for residents, as a weather forecast from the National Weather Service indicates a possible freeze.

A cold front rolling in on the evening of Dec. 10 could lead to the first freeze of the season, according to a Dec. 10 release from the city of Georgetown.

The cold front is expected to last through Dec. 12 and could bring northerly wind gusts of up to 30 mph with wind chill in the 30s and 20s, according to the release.

Per the NWS, the freeze warning is set to expire at 8 a.m. Dec. 11.

In the release from the city, Georgetown residents are advised to take the following actions to prevent harm to people, plants, pets and pipes during the possible freeze:

• People: Dress in layers and a hat to retain body heat.
• Plants: Move container plants indoors, and cover larger outdoor plants with a frost blanket.
• Pets: In freezing temperatures, it is advised to bring pets indoors or provide shelter, as well as blankets and additional food.
• Pipes: To prevent frozen and burst pipes, cover outdoor spigots and faucets with faucet covers, and foam pipe insulation on outdoor pipes. Aboveground irrigation backflow devices should also be wrapped or insulated. It may also be helpful to turn off backflow valves or irrigation systems to reduce their potential of freezing, according to the city.
