Georgetown was the sixth fastest-growing city nationally in 2016-17, according to new U.S. Census population estimates released 11 p.m. Wednesday. The city’s population has also topped 70,000 residents for the first time in Census estimates. Texas is home to seven of the nation’s 15 fastest-growing cities, according to Census population estimates that rank percentage growth for municipalities exceeding 50,000 population. Frisco, New Braunfels and Pflugerville topped the overall national rankings, and McKinney—No. 9, Flower Mound—No. 11—and Cedar Park—No. 13—also made the cut.

Georgetown’s population growth

Georgetown has consistently ranked among the fastest-growing American cities with populations exceeding 50,000 residents since 2011-12. The city has added between 2,113 and 4,611 new residents each year over the past six years, according to Census estimates.
  •  2016-17: 5.4 percent growth, adding 3,545 residents for a total of 70,685. Sixth fastest-growing city in the U.S.
  • 2015-16: 5.5 percent growth, adding 3,501 residents for a total of 67,140. Fifth fastest-growing city in the U.S.
  • 2014-15: 7.8 percent growth, adding 4,611 residents for a total population of 63,716. First fastest-growing city in the U.S.
  • 2013-14: 7.6 percent growth, adding 4,168 residents for a total population of 58,102. Second fastest-growing city in the U.S.
  • 2012-13: 4.5 percent growth, adding 2,365 residents for a total population of 54,989. Seventh fastest-growing city in the U.S.
  • 2011-12: 4.2 percent population growth, adding 2,113 residents for a total population of 52,303. Seventh fastest-growing city in the U.S.

Increases elsewhere

Other Central Texas cities ranking in the top 15 fastest-growing cities in the nation in 2016-17 include: New Braunfels, which ranked second with an 8 percent increase and total population of 79,152; Pflugerville, which ranked third with a 6.5 percent increase and total population of 63,359; and Cedar Park, which ranked 13th with a 4.2 percent increase and total population of 75,704. The city of Austin ranked 12th among the 15 U.S. cities with the largest numeric population increase between July 1, 2016, and July 1, 2017. Austin added 12,515 residents during that time frame. The city's total 2017 population estimate was 950,715 residents.
The Lone Star State also dominated the 15 most-populated U.S. cities as of July 2017, with an estimated 2.3 million residents in Houston, which ranked fourth overall behind New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago. San Antonio (No. 7), Dallas (No. 9) and Austin (No. 11) remain unchanged in rankings, and Fort Worth became the 15th-largest city—knocking Indianapolis out of the top 15.
