Martin Luther King III to attend Frisco scholarship competition, gala as keynote speaker

Human rights advocate Martin Luther King III will be making a stop in Frisco in 2025 to speak at a high school scholarship competition named in honor of the legacy of his father, Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

The gist

The event, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Oration Competition & Gala, will be held staring at 7 p.m. Jan. 17, 2025, according to a news release from Linking Cultures of Frisco, the organization behind the event.

The competition will center around five Frisco ISD or local homeschooled juniors and seniors competing live for $7,000 in scholarships split between first, second and third place. According to the Linking Cultures of Frisco website, the five competing students will have already went through an essay competition based on the theme "Many Cultures, One Dream" and competed in a separate oration competition to make it to the live competition and gala in January 2025.

King III will deliver the keynote address as part of the Jan. 17 event, according to the release.

The event is formal attire-only. There are corporate and individual sponsorship opportunities available, the proceeds from which will support the event and scholarship funds, according to the release.

Some context

The Jan. 17 event is the Linking Cultures of Frisco’s 15th time hosting the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Oration Competition & Gala, according to the release. In that time, the organization has given out $100,000 in scholarships.
