David and Kelly Simmonds left the corporate world to run their own family-owned business that centers around a healthy lifestyle.

“We’ve always been in the corporate world. I worked for a big oil and gas company and Kelly was a trader for a hedge fund, but we have three young daughters and we just wanted to be on our own,” David said.

The couple started looking for businesses for sale in Frisco in October 2015 and saw that Family Health Market, a vitamin and supplement shop where they often frequented, was for sale. The shop first opened in 2003.

“It was the perfect fit for us and two months later, we owned the business,” David said.

David and Kelly said they live healthy lives, but said there was a lot for them to learn about the business.

“Coming from the corporate world to running a retail store that’s open seven days a week, 12-hour days with 45 employees—I mean, that’s a big change,” David said.

Kelly said the employees were a big factor in learning about the business and the products.

“We have employees that have been in the industry for 20-30 years,” Kelly said. “Our employees don’t work on commission, so what they’re selling you is going to be the best product for you, and I think that sets us apart.”

Family Health Market offers a variety of vitamins, supplements and sports nutrition products. The business also carries organic food options. Each location has a Smoothie Zone, in which customers can buy smoothies, wraps, salads and sandwiches.

When David and Kelly first took over the business there were already two locations, and they recently opened a third location on Legacy Drive.

In July, the couple launched an online store to broaden their business.

“The best opportunity for us as owners is to expand, and after speaking to customers and doing some research we realized that people that live in [West Frisco] don’t want to drive over to [our location on] Preston Road,” David said. “If [customers] were not going to keep coming here, we would have to go to them.”

The couple said they hope to continue to improve a business that has been established in Frisco for 15 years.

“We aren’t trying to start something; it was already established, and we just wanted to make it better,” Kelly said.
