The Houston Planning Commission will consider a variance request in August for a 17-acre development at the former location of an Exxon research campus near Greenway Plaza. Developers for The RO project, referred to as River Oaks Green in city filings, are requesting a building line change to 9 1/2 feet from 25 feet along Buffalo Speedway, which would allow them to include “architectural features, overhangs and [a] cantilevered habitable building area” in their plans. The site will comprise eight parcels, which will be developed in two phases, with the first including a retail/office building and a retail/multifamily residential building, according to plans filed with the request. Brochures advertising the development also suggest a hotel could come to the site. "The contemplated uses for the first floors of both the initial buildings will be commercial retail uses, allowing for engagement and activity at the street level to create a meaningful pedestrian experience," according to the filing. The commission was expected to take up the item July 25, but it was delayed at the request of the applicant, Houston-based engineering firm BGE Inc.
