New retirement community to offer lake homes, apartments, assisted living, memory care in McKinney

Residents age 55-plus will have a new full-service retirement community to call home in McKinney as soon as 2022.

The Touchmark at Emerald Lake development is located near the southwest intersection of Virginia Parkway and Hardin Boulevard. The community will be built in two phases. Phase 1 will include nearly 100 independent-living and 50 assisted-living apartment homes, 32 memory care residences, 20 casitas and 12 lake homes, according to a news release from Touchmark.

Construction on Phase 1 will start in 2020 with a completion in 2022, said Kendra Lackey, president of Touchmark's Development & Construction department. Phase 1 will be roughly 30 acres and will also include a lake, open spaces and a walking trail, Lackey told Community Impact Newspaper.

“We are excited to open our first location in Texas,” Touchmark CEO Marcus Breuer said in the news release. “Each Touchmark community is designed to reflect the local environment. With this site’s picturesque lakeside backdrop and warm climate, the design will certainly include an abundance of open-air dining and outdoor entertainment.”

Touchmark at Emerald Lake will also include a lakeside pavilion, an outdoor pool, a health and fitness club, on-site restaurants, private courtyards, lake activities and lawn space for concerts, according to the release. The health and fitness club will be available to those age 50 and older. It will also be open to the public, according to the release.

There are no dates set for construction of Phase 2, but Lackey estimates it will begin in 2025-2026. Rick Wessell, senior vice president and director of construction in Touchmark's Development & Construction department, said there may be additional phases in the future, depending on the community's need.

Nearly 70 acres of the 80-acre property was rezoned by McKinney City Council in April 2018. The property was rezoned from agricultural and planned development districts to planned development district. The rezoning allows for assisted- and independent-living uses in addition to commercial uses.

Touchmark develops, builds and operates full-service retirement communities in the U.S. and Canada. This will be Touchmark's 14th community, Wessell said.
