Two Democrats are running for the Texas House District 64 seat for the March 3 primary election.
The details
Christie Wood and Julie Evans will face off in the Democratic primary election for a chance to earn the Texas House District 64 seat later this year.
District 64 covers parts of Denton County, including the city of Denton, Krum, Sanger and Robson Ranch, along with all of Wise County.
Wood is a retired small business owner while Evans was an educator for more than 15 years that includes time with Denton ISD.
The Republican primary race for the position will be between incumbent Andy Hopper and Lisa McEntire.
The winner of the Republican primary will face the winner of the Democratic primary in November. The winner of that election will be sworn in for a two-year term in January 2027.
Preparing for the polls
Early voting runs Feb. 17-27 for March 3 primary races across Texas, including 18 statewide races and various local races. Registered voters may cast ballots in either Texas’ Republican or Democratic primary, but not both. Third-party candidates will appear on the ballot in November.

Why are you running for office?
I wish to restore civility and confidence in the leadership representing Denton and Wise County residents. Those we elect should represent all constituents, not just a minority. I wish to work with colleagues in the Texas Legislature to enact meaningful legislation for the betterment of all Texans.
What are the biggest challenges facing the county?
HD-64 is undergoing rapid population growth with the long-range strategic plans put in place unable to cope. Getting municipalities and special taxing entities to work together with state support to take advantage of cost-of-scale savings for large-scale infrastructure needs such as water, energy and fire/EMT services is a big challenge.
How do you plan to address these issues?
The passing of bi-partisan bills. It's one thing to introduce bills, but it's quite another to move these bills through committees and actually bring them to the floor for debate, amendment and being passed into law. Success is also supporting legislation from colleagues that align with North Texans' priorities.
What would your top priorities be if you are elected?
Support for public education systems, educators and staff. Comprehensive healthcare for all, including rural healthcare needs, women's reproductive rights, mental health support and LGBTQ health services. Water and energy planning and funding statewide. Infrastructure planning, particularly for rural areas of Texas such as Wise County.

Why are you running for office?
Our community deserves representatives who show up and fight for working families. Running has shown me what a difference strong, compassionate leadership can make. I'm stepping forward because I know we can create opportunities, invest in our future and build a government that truly reflects the people it serves.
What are the biggest challenges facing the county?
We’re at a crossroads of AI, over development, climate crisis and the disruption of our democracy. Funding education, creating an affordable healthcare system and lowering the cost of living must be at the top of the list. Along with illegal ICE activity on our streets means we need action now.
How do you plan to address these issues?
We need to evaluate our development relationship with Denton, put restrictions on AI data center development and raise the minimum wage. Raising the minimum wage will help offset high rent and mortgage rates, flow money back into the market and allow people to buy groceries and create a livable future.
What would your top priorities be if you are elected?
Education. As a retired educator, I know how hard it is for teachers in the classroom. We need to adequately fund all schools, create trade grants for after high school and end the voucher program. Evaluate repairing old water systems to aid our rural communities and create comprehensive, affordable healthcare.
