Updated 1:30 a.m., March 2 A runoff election for Tarrant County Sheriff will be held May 24 as no candidate received more than 50 percent of the total votes. With all 694 precincts reporting, incumbent Dee Anderson was the closest to winning with 48.59 percent or 83,400 votes, followed by challenger Bill E. Waybourn with 40.67 percent or 69,801 votes. The two will face off in the runoff election. Garris, who suspended his campaign in February, tallied 10.74 percent or 18,426 votes. All results are unofficial until canvassed. Posted 7:33 p.m., March 1 After early voting totals were released March 1, incumbent Dee Anderson is leading against opponent Bill E. Waybourn, receiving 48.04 percent of the votes, or 38,713 votes, in the Republican primary election race for Tarrant County sheriff. Waybourn received 43.39 percent of the early votes, or 34,970 votes. John Garris, who suspended his campaign, received 8.57 percent of the votes, or 6,903 votes. All election results are unofficial until canvassed. Incumbent Dee Anderson is a native of Tarrant County and has held multiple positions with the Arlington Police Department. Anderson co-founded Amber Alert, a cooperative effort between law enforcement and the media to instantly alert the public of a suspected child abduction. The Ambert Alert system has received statewide and national recognition. Anderson is seeking his fifth and final term. Challenger Waybourn, a former Dalworthington Gardens police chief for 31 years, ran against Anderson in the GOP primary in 2008. Waybourn’s entire law enforcement career was spent on the police force of Dalworthington Gardens, a small bedroom community surrounded by Arlington. He also worked with the security police in the Air Force. Garris, a Tarrant County jailer, suspended his campaign for sheriff in early February.
