City council approved a resolution establishing a charter review commission and appointed members during the Dec. 2 meeting.
The details
The 11-person commission will convene to recommend amendments to ensure the charter conforms to federal and state laws and clarifying and condensing charter sections.
Proposed charter amendments must receive approval from a majority of voters during a charter amendment election.
Zooming out
City Secretary Aimee Nemer presented an overview of how council will appoint commissioners and the review process during the Sept. 16 council meeting.
According to city documents, the charter is required to convene a new commission every 10 years. The last charter review commission was appointed in 2015.
What’s next?
The charter review commission will meet January through May to discuss potential amendment propositions, according to a presentation from the Sept. 16 meeting. During this time, there will be two public hearings to allow Richardson residents a chance to voice their opinions.
The commission’s final report is due to council on May 30, 2025 and in June, the commission and council will hold a joint meeting to review recommendations and determine if a charter amendment election will be held.
If called, the election will be held Nov. 4, 2025.
