Richardson residents will be able to witness the closing of a 50-year time capsule and check out live musical performances during the city’s 150-year anniversary event June 24.

The anniversary event, which was discussed by city officials during an April 3 Richardson City Council meeting, will be held in the Main Street Plaza in downtown Richardson from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., with music available until 2:45 p.m.

Activities during the event include comments from city officials, recognition of dignitaries, special guests and musical performances from local organizations, including the Richardson Community Band, the Rich-Tone Chorus and the Special Edition Band. Acoustic stage performances will include additional entertainment from Richardson-based performers.

Other elements of the celebration include:
  • Recruiting booths from local organizations;
  • Kids activities, including bounce houses and water games;
  • A touch-a-truck event; and
  • Food trucks.
One of the major aspects of the anniversary event will be the recovery of a time capsule buried during the 100-year anniversary and burial of a new one.

The city is asking Richardson residents to submit ideas for items to include in the new time capsule. The city is expected to begin accepting memorabilia for the capsule in May.

“The time capsule is to celebrate what today looks like: everything about our community from technology to our cultural diversity,” Director of Parks and Recreation Lori Smeby said.

Criteria for inclusion include items that “reflect life in Richardson in 2023,” including people, places and current events. Plastic or other nonmetal items are best, alongside high resolution photos that include names, ages and locations, officials said. Space is limited in the capsule, with the city preferring to use items that are no larger than 6 inches cubed. Additional restrictions include no liquids or perishable items and no technology that needs to be opened to view contents.

Display items will be available at the anniversary celebration before the capsule is buried until 2073. Those interested can email ideas to [email protected].
