The city of Richardson announced the inaugural Culture in the Core event to take place in downtown Richardson.

The event, held in honor of the city’s globally oriented community, is scheduled to take place noon-5 p.m. June 4. The free event will feature a variety of international cuisines and vendors as well as multicultural dance and music performances.

The Core District, which includes the Chinatown, Downtown, Heights, Interurban and Lockwood neighborhoods, was introduced in 2018 as an entertainment area that offers unique restaurants, independent retailers and special events.

The city has committed to major reconstruction projects in the area, including roadway and pedestrian improvements along Main Street and Greenville Avenue, a new public safety campus and more.

According to a May 9 press release, the event will feature vendors selling treasures from around the globe, a variety of culturally diverse art displays, and musical and dance displays by local groups representing Richardson’s cultural identity.

Richardson has previously been recognized by the Texas Legislature as the International Business Capital of North Texas. City officials estimated 1 of every 4 Richardson residents was born outside of the U.S. with hundreds of global cultures and countries represented among the cities’ residents.

“Our reputation as one of Texas’ most diverse cities and as a truly American ‘melting pot’ makes Richardson the ideal place for gathering to learn about and celebrate our tremendous tapestry of cultures, which are an essential part of our spirited community life,” Richardson Mayor Paul Voelker said in a statement. “We look forward to welcoming visitors from across North Texas as we share in this joyous occasion together.”

Free event parking will be available at Texas and Kaufman streets with overflow parking offered at the Richardson ISD Administration Building off of South Greenville Avenue. A bus will be available from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. to provide transportation between parking and the event.
