Town officials, Prosper police officers and Howard met to unveil the new street sign on Aug. 15.
"Mike Howard's extraordinary service in law enforcement exemplifies the values of integrity, dedication and commitment to the safety of our community,” Mayor David Bristol said in an emailed statement. “The decision to name this street in his honor is a meaningful way the Town Council and I set out to acknowledge his lasting impact on Prosper, ensuring his legacy of protecting others is forever honored and remembered.”
About Mike Howard
Howard’s career in public safety stretches back 72 years in both local and federal law enforcement positions. After becoming a peace officer in Saginaw in 1952, he served as a Secret Service agent from 1960-74 for former Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson and the first families.
Howard eventually moved to the Frisco Police Department, where he served 19 years, and the Prosper Police Department, where he has been for the last nearly 18 years. He is believed to be the longest-serving peace officer in the U.S.
“With over seven decades in law enforcement, Mike Howard is a sterling example of the character, competence, compassion, courage, and commitment we hold in the highest regard,” Prosper Police Chief Doug Kowalski said in an emailed statement. “It is only fitting that we pay tribute to his contributions, and dedication to the safety of citizens of Texas by memorializing that the Prosper Police Building is located at the corner of Safety Way and Mike Howard Lane.”
