Prosper’s fourth fire station is moving toward finalized designs.

Prosper Town Council members approved a $342,300 increase for architectural and engineering design services for Fire Station No. 4 during a May 28 meeting.

About the project

Fire Station No. 4 is set to break ground in late 2024, according to a meeting presentation. It will be Prosper’s first fire station east of Coit Road.

“This station will be ... strategically positioned to serve the eastern part of our town,” Fire Chief Stuart Blasingame said.

The breakdown

Council members originally approved a $608,380 design agreement with Brown, Reynolds, Watford Architects to design the fire station in November 2021.

Unexpected price increases and postponements in the years since is what led BRW Architects to request an additional $465,465 to complete the designs, according to a meeting presentation.
  • November 2021: Council approves a $608,380 design agreement based off of a $4.6 million construction estimate.
  • June 2022: Council approves an agreement with Pogue Construction.
  • August 2022: Council sees early designs.
  • January 2023: Council sets the project price at $10.21 million and postpones project to October 2023.
  • June 2023: Prosper’s capital improvement project subcommittee recommends another yearlong postponement to prioritize Legacy Road construction.

As of May 28, $485,215 of BRW Architects’ original $608,380 agreement has been spent.

The leftover $123,165 was taken into account and subtracted from the requested increase, leaving BRW Architects with $342,300, according to meeting documents.

The town has $1.65 million in unallocated public safety bond funds for the additional project cost, according to meeting documents.

Something to note

The original agreement with BRW Architects included an 8.85% fee on any price increases. This was removed after some negotiations, Blasingame said.

“We saved about $400,000 by amending our contract,” he said.
