Prosper Town Council members unanimously approved a specific-use permit for a wireless communications tower, support structure and screening wall during a Jan. 23 meeting.
“I want to thank the applicant once again for the many attempts to get a cell tower at that location,” Mayor David Bristol said.
The impact
A map of Prosper structures—including wireless communication towers—highlights the need for a cell tower in the area, Development Services Director David Hoover said. The map was made in 2021 and presented to council members during the Jan. 23 meeting.
“It's desperately needed in that area,” council member Marcus Ray said.
The details
The 105-foot-tall structure will be built on an approximately 0.1-acre portion of the Lakewood Preserve property, according to meeting documents. Plans also include a support structure, 4-foot screening wall and a road leading to it.
Original plans placed the tower closer to Coit Road but later it moved closer to the treeline at the recommendation of Propser’s Planning and Zoning Commission, Hoover said.
Oak trees will also be planted around the structure as additional screening, Hoover said.
“The trees will probably grow to 50-60 feet tall with some time,” he said. “They’re not going to completely cover it but ... it seems to be a good solution to hide the tower as much as it can be.”
Going forward
Building the cell tower is not expected to interfere with current construction at the park site, according to meeting documents. More information on when tower construction will begin is expected to be announced at a future date.
