School zones surrounding Prosper ISD’s seven elementary schools will end 10 minutes later to reflect new, slightly longer school hours for the district’s grade K-5 campuses.

Prosper Town Council members updated the school zone limit hours during a Sept. 10 meeting. The time limits for school zones surrounding PISD’s middle and high schools will stay the same as their school hours were not changed.

The breakdown

School zones, which drop the speed limit surrounding Prosper ISD's schools to 20 mph, usually run from 30 minutes before school starts to 15 minutes after. They also run 15 minutes before the end of school to 30 minutes after the end of school.

For example, if class at an elementary school starts at 7:42 a.m., then the school zone will be in effect between 7:15-8 a.m. When school ends at 3 p.m., the school zone will run from 2:45-3:30 p.m.

PISD officials extended the school hours for its elementary campuses from 2:52 p.m. to 3 p.m. earlier this year. The new school zones will reflect that, according to meeting documents.

The cost

It will cost approximately $2,000 to replace the town’s existing school zone signs with ones showing the updated times, according to meeting documents. The funds are available through a public works account.
