Prosper ISD’s eighth middle school is on track to open in 2026 as Celina officials rezone a corner of city land to allow public school facilities.

In a nutshell

Celina City Council members rezoned 46 acres made up of both city and county land to allow community facilities, which includes schools, during an Aug. 13 meeting.

The 46 acres is already owned by PISD and is made up of:

Land zoned as AG in Celina is restricted to single-family residential homes and ranching, according to Celina’s City Charter. Rezoning it under one use, community facilities, brings in all 46 acres as a single district.

Under state law, PISD officials could have built the school on the land regardless of the city’s decision to rezone it, said Dusty McAfee, Celina’s director of development services, during a July 18 Celina Planning and Zoning Commission meeting.

Commission members had unanimously recommended council approve the rezoning during the meeting in July.

What they’re saying

No residents chose to speak on the item during council’s Aug. 13 meeting, but city staff did provide an update on some of the traffic concerns shared by residents who attended the zoning commission’s July meeting.

“Ultimately, our engineering department will require a traffic study of some sort when the plans come through,” Celina Planning Director Madhuri Mohan said.

Two points of connection are also required along the roadways near the incoming school, Mohan said. More details are expected to be revealed once construction on the school begins.
