A new shade structure will be installed at Cynthia A. Cockrell Elementary School’s playground.

Prosper’s Parks and Recreation department is partnering with Prosper ISD to purchase and install a shade structure that will cover most of the play equipment at the elementary school, according to a Prosper Town Council agenda. Council approved the $95,228 purchase, which covers the cost of the structure and full installation, during a Jan. 9 meeting.

The elementary’s parent-teacher organization will provide $30,000 toward the project cost, city documents stated.

The shade structure will make the playground safer during the summer and will extend the life of the playground by minimizing the amount of direct ultraviolet light hitting the equipment, the agenda states.
