Hey Sugar is more than just a small town candy shop, Manager Maggie Evans said.

Evans said Hey Sugar offers a welcoming environment with details that are well thought-through.

“Being here in Celina ... we all kind of know each other even though it's expanding so fast,” Evans said. “Anytime people stop in here, they almost always run into someone they know.

The background

Evans said the store started when 10-year-old Clayton Britton talked his mother, Kristin Britton, into letting him sell candy out of a small Airstream trailer at his siblings equestrian event. Clayton Britton is now in college.

“[Kristin] said [Clayton] could keep any profit and he ended up bringing in like $1,000,” Evans said. “Every time a sibling had an event he brought the concession stand ... and they made a whole candy shop out of it.”

The first Hey Sugar Candy Store opened in Roanoke, Evans said. There are now seven locations, including Waco and Broken Bow, Oklahoma. The Celina location opened in 2019.

What they offer

The store offers a number of candy selections, including bulk options of classic candies like Runts and fruit sours. They also sell lollipops, toys, chocolate and soda.

“We try to keep everything as stocked as we can with all different kinds of variety,” Evans said.

Along with candy, the store offers ice cream from TX Creamery in Southlake, which is also owned by Kristin Britton.

“We have about 30 to 40 flavors at any given time,” Evans said. “We do try to mix it up a little bit; we usually have a seasonal assortment. We try to be as unique as we can.”

Popular flavors include Cookie Monster—a combination of cookie dough and cookies and cream—cinnamon ginger, Texas honey whiskey, mint chocolate chip, toffee and Hey Sugar, the store’s signature flavor, which has Reece’s Pieces, Butterfinger, M&Ms and bits of toffee.

What else?

Additionally, Hey Sugar offers cookie decorating and an event space for birthday and ice cream parties .

Staff will decorate the store for parties, Evans said.

“We’ll have a plate with two cookies, frosting and sprinkles,” Evans said. “Then the birthday person gets to pick out what kind of topping they’d like from the bulk bin.”
