A pair of monuments honoring Ross Perot will soon be built on the Legacy Pedestrian Bridge near the corner of Legacy Drive and Dallas Parkway.

The gist

The monuments will feature obelisk-style structures with bronze eagle statues on top and a bronze plaque, according to a news release from the city.

Plano City Council approved plans for the monument during its Jan. 12 meeting.

“We felt it appropriate, as there really isn't any sort of monument or recognition that has been given to Mr. Perot for the investment and for the development that he's made in Plano,” City Manager Mark Israelson said. “This has been approved by the family, and with all that's going on in the Legacy area, we felt that this was an appropriate time to honor the commitment and the investment.”

Put in perspective

Ross Perot was the CEO of Electronic Data Systems, which was headquartered at 5400 Legacy Drive. The EDS campus opened in 1992 and was one of the first major developments in the Legacy area.

AT&T announced earlier this month that it was planning to move its global headquarters from Dallas to 54 acres of the former EDS headquarters.

“Ross Perot helped shape Plano into a city known for economic leadership and opportunity,” Mayor John Muns said in the release. “His vision, leadership, and belief in this community transformed a once rural area into a globally recognized center for business and innovation. These monuments ensure that his legacy and contributions will always be honored and remembered in Plano.”
