The expected inclement weather this week may affect Plano services and schools.

Current situation

Because of weather conditions, trash collection may be delayed, according to the city’s website. Additionally, residents can stay informed about weather conditions and resources available to them through the city’s social media or signing up with City Call, which will send out alerts to residents. The city’s website offers advice as well, such as dressing in layers, covering pipes and leaving faucets running.

Other resources include the Plano Overnight Warming Shelter, located at the East Plano Islamic Center at 4700 14th St., which is now open. The shelter is an overnight short-term emergency shelter offering safety for unhoused neighbors when temperatures or a combination of precipitation, wind, and temperature become dangerously inclement.

What you need to know

Also found on the city’s website are these tips from Atmos Energy:
  • Never use an oven or a gas stovetop to heat your home.
  • Protect natural gas meters. Natural gas meters are weather-proof but to ensure that the meter keeps working smoothly, remove snow and ice from natural gas meters with a broom or brush. Never kick or chip snow and ice away with a hard object. Call Atmos Energy's Emergency Number at 866-322-8667 if you have concerns about your meter.
  • Make sure external vents for dryers and other natural gas equipment are clear. Blocked vents for dryers and other gas appliances can lead to a dangerous buildup of carbon monoxide gas. If you have questions about proper venting, contact a licensed plumber or qualified contractor.
  • If you think you smell gas, act fast. Leave the area immediately and call 911 from a safe distance.
Lastly, the State of the City address, which was originally scheduled for Jan. 9, has been rescheduled for Jan. 28.
