A Plano private school, Archgate Montessori Academy, has received updated specific use permits that will allow for flexibility in how classroom spaces are used.

Plano City Council approved the amended specific use permits for the school during the July 22 meeting. The new total capacity for the school will be 360 children between its five daycare and private school programs.

What you need to know

Beth Tuttle, a member of the school’s board of directors, said the cap on private school enrollment would have limited how many students could continue to attend the school. Based on the most recent school year, enrollment was around 270 students, she added.

Recently, enrollment shifts at the school have created a need for more flexibility in how the school’s 15 classrooms are used.

“We saw a huge increase in private school age children that were looking for a smaller environment and saw a drop off in toddlers and primary school children who could stay home with their families,” Tuttle said.

What else?

According to city documents, no other changes to the specific use permits were proposed. The additional enrollment that would be allowed is not likely to cause any traffic issues or backup onto Legacy Drive, Tuttle said.

If future demographic shifts occur to the school’s population, Tuttle said the combined total should prevent the school from having to ask for further updates to the specific use permits.
