Frisco has reportedly emerged as a favorite to host the 2018 NFL Draft at The Star, according to an ESPN article posted early today.

According to ESPN, an official decision on the 2018 draft location is not expected to be made until after the 2017 draft, which is scheduled for April 27-29 in Philadelphia. League sources told ESPN that Philadelphia is also in consideration for the 2018 draft.

The Dallas Cowboys have been pushing to have the NFL draft at The Star since before the facility opened in August 2016.

In May 2016 at a Frisco Chamber of Commerce meeting, Chad Estis, Dallas Cowboys executive vice president of business operations, said the franchise was in “deep discussion” with the NFL about hosting the draft at The Star.

“…the national exposure that the NFL Draft brings is massive, and that would be three days of all eyes on Frisco, Texas, and The Star,” Estis said during the meeting.

The NFL Draft was held in Chicago in 2015, which was the first time the draft was held outside of New York City since 1965. The league picked Chicago over Los Angeles to host the draft after its longtime home, Radio City Music Hall in Manhattan, was unavailable. The draft was hosted in Chicago again in 2016.

Moving the draft outside of New York opened up the possibility for the event to be held in other cities, Estis said.
