Students at McKinney ISD are changing the way roofs are used by adding a living roof at McKinney Boyd High School.
The project was started in the beginning of the 2014-15 school year as a challenge to students to leave a legacy behind after graduation.
Sagar Patel, MISD student and plant team leader, said the finished product will be a place where teachers can take their students outside, creating a new learning experience.
"We also plan to have performances from our fine arts department, movie nights, and [allow] clubs to hold meetings up on the roof," he said.
The project has an estimated cost of $1.4 million. At this time, students are developing a funding plan with plans to meet with local service organizations such as the rotary club, chamber of commerce, Lions and Kiwanis among others, Patel said.
Patel said six students are also looking to get a LEED Green Associate certified for the purpose of assuring this project will be LEED Certified. The students have also completed the application process for a 501c3 status through the school's Engineering Booster Club.
